MAKING A COUNTRY MUSIC VIDEO

“I can’t afford to go to Alice Springs to do a video clip”, if your clip is about the fair dinkum outback, can you afford not to? Even if it’s not our job is to give you true value for money.

“But how much is a video?”

Yes, it is all a bit "how long is a piece of string?" if you have quite a complex video in mind. We do start very basic videos, however, at $2200, typically if you don't have much money for the actual budget (and who does these days?) we try to use the countryside here and various other locations to give it a bigger, warmer feel. Anyway, a good clip will never sell a lousy song but sometimes it's more the idea, the feel and the performance that sell the video more than the flashy bits!

Remember though, once the idea is locked in, it can’t be changed as your quote is dependent on what’s involved in putting it all together…make sense?

If you want to add people, horses, vehicles, helicopters etc, obviously up goes the price! Professional camera bits including dolly shots, reflectors and jib shots are highly recommended and lift the fee somewhat per day as we then need an Assistant (unless you are bringing someone). If it is a low budget clip we would probably only need 1 day to shoot anyway.

Also we do realise people have some expense in getting to Alice but there are cheaper ways around that too.
Firstly, we throw in accommodation and meals at the family cottage as part of the fee (John Williamson, Ronni Rae Rivers, Brendon Walmsley and Jim Haynes have all done it and survived!) Also Tiger Airways have just started direct Alice Springs-Melbourne flights. So if you’re from Melbourne it can be dirt cheap to fly, and from elsewhere something like a Virgin/Tiger combination would make it very affordable. From NZ, UK, USA or Canada and holidaying in Australia? Make your clip while you’re here!

ABOUT CHRIS AND COUNTRY MUSIC

ASFTV’s Proprietor, Chris Tangey occasionally has philosophical arguments with himself (OK we won’t go there…) but he also has specific sayings. One is; “ I don’t do sicko Rock videos…the world’s a sick enough place without me adding to it”.

For this reason Chris only directs Country music clips.

ASFTV has produced country music videos including many with the legendary Australian performer John Williamson (see client testimonials), including the entire DVD for his “Chandelier of Stars album, Ted Egan (for which we received a Golden Guitar nomination as video clip of the year at Tamworth 2002) and for up and coming country music stars like Warren H Williams. We also produced the comedy clip “Come along for the Ride” for comedian Jim Haynes and three-times golden guitar winner, Brendon Walmsley.

In 2006 we produced two clips for Ronni Rae Rivers. Our first clip with Ronni, "it's only make believe" reached number 1 nationally in June on the Country Music Channel top 30, and we followed it with "Janine-care of the stars"

If you want to make a country music video in million dollar scenery at a reasonable professional price, talk to us.

Early in 2004 we were commissioned by the CMAA (Country Music Association of Australia) to film for the first time behind the scenes at the Australian College of Country Music. Tutors and guest speakers interviewed included Kasey Chambers. Beccy Cole, Tamara Stewart, John Williamson, Troy Cassar-Daley, Sara Storer, Brendon Walmsley and many others.

Chris has been nominated for Video Director of the Year at the Country Music Achiever Awards and as a Golden Guitar finalist for Video Clip of the Year.

And he loves his country music! He used to be drive-time radio announcer on 3UZ Country Gold in Melbourne and breakfast announcer on Radio Waikato/Pacific Country in Hamilton New Zealand.
